I just recently began following up on this game (mostly out of nostalgia) and I think it's looking a good game. What do you guys think?

Just in case you don't know what I am talking about:

They have brass balls if they are going to call this Sonic FOUR.

Sonic team better pull a diamond here, because is Sonic 4 is known as the game that sucks, well, bye bye sonic.

I saw on some sonic sites, people are beginning whiny internet petitions to get Sonic to look like his original design (I admit, it would have been cool if they made it look like the Genesis and Sega CD games). Why do people think game companies listen to online petitions? Hell, does anyone listen to online petitions?

It looks to be a 2D Sonic game. And all the 2D Sonic games that have been released have been pretty good.

This could work.

Be wary.

At least they're aware that "friends" are a terrible idea in the Sonic games, though.

I don't know why they just can't make a good current gen sonic, I mean it can't be that hard. Make the layout like mario's games and just make him walk faster.

The day I bought my TV, there were trailers of another Sonic game, similar to the DreamCast ones. Is that still around?

This isn't really the solution. They've actually come very close to perfect time and time again, only to completely decimate the game in some way.

Adventure actually wasn't too bad. For a first venture into what 3D could do for the Sonic games, it was very creative. Mostly, it was the death of the Dreamcast and the fact that the controls didn't age well that led retrospective opinions of it to falter. Adventure 2 was in a similar boat, but it began to show the signs of annoying-as-hell "friends" getting in the way of running around, namely Shadow.

Since the Adventure games, it all went to pot. The fast-paced levels were still there, but there was usually some "innovative" new gameplay element that was actually something decidedly NOT Sonic, and that was integrated very poorly into the game, making it feel like half of a good Sonic game, and half of a terrible 3D platformer. Secret Rings, Black Knight, Heroes and Unleashed all had this problem to varying degrees. StH06 had the honor of having decent gameplay which was ruined by a horrifying storyline, and the fact that it was basically only a third of a game.

I do think a 3D sonic would be easy, though. Take all of the fast parts of the past games, and make a game out of them. Don't try to overdo the story either. Just as the only inspiration Mario has ever needed is Bowser kidnapping Peach, all Sonic needs is Eggman stealing the Chaos Emeralds and hiding in his spaceship.

I agree ph00t, but I don't understand why Sega can't get that through their thick head's.

Not to mention all the horrible glitches and such. It's like the people they had making that game had never coded before.

Also all the creepy furry stuff that has been in the series since it made the leap to 3D.

I don't think personally there has been any good 3D Sonic games. Sonic Adventure was just terrible for a variety of reasons, but I don't think that means it's impossible to have a good one. From what I've seen of Sonic X-treme, it resembled Mario 64 in the approach it was taking to translate the series to 3D, but unfortunately that was canceled. Like with Castlevania, I think it can be done, it just hasn't.

I'm guilty of getting excited about this. I'm hoping you won't take a dump on me again, Sonic Team.

If they screw up Sonic 4 by adding Shadow the Emo Hedgehog and that silver telekinetic abomination, I swear I will train an army of rabid furries and let them attack Sonic Team's HQ.

I cannot hold m excitement for Sonic 4, plus its fun that the plot follows Sonic and Knuckles directly (as if it mattered).

Honestly I didn't hate all 3D Sonics, Adventure 1 and 2 were good in their day but haven't aged well, Heroes was where it went downhill. Shadow was a dud, Sonic 2006 was a holocaust on the fanbase, but then Unleashed came and the 360/PS3 version is actually quite tasty. There are some quite epic speed-runs of the Daytime stages on the youtube.

I'm sure the game will be okay, but you know, there's been 2D sonic games in recent years, and they've sucked.
