How Samus Aran Died on her last mission.
I'm going to take a stab at this, been wanting to do this particular idea for a while, although it's not really her last mission, as you will see.
A Little More than AnnoyingSamus knew her shields were all but depleted, and was being careful, but occupied with the underwater pirates chasing her. Still, she was dazed; her nerves were still recovering from the shock of the last hit. Focusing on her heads up display as she entered the sandstone grotto, she made sure there were none of the burrowing beasts in the chamber. What she hadn't noticed was the chute leech that had leapt up into the seaweed above, sensing prey. She didn’t know at first what it was that then landed on her, but as her suit disarticulated, the shields now gone, she realized, too late, what it was.
The ring of sharp teeth dug into her back and shoulders, and she cried in pain while wrestling with the monster. The prey was more than the predator had expected; Samus had almost managed wriggle free, but her strength was failing. She could feel the fast-acting venom digesting her from within, the pain and trauma quickly overwhelming her. Her limbs too weak to support her weight, she flopped to the sandy bottom of the grotto. The molluskoid repositioned itself to secrete the rest of its digestive cocktail over its mammalian prey, only the trace of her hair protruding out from under its mantle. Too weak to draw breath, too faint to concentrate on anything save the extreme physical discomfort she was being subjected to, Samus twitched her fingers, then tried as best she could to relax. At least, soon, she would have peace. The venom proved lethal within half a minute of injection.
Five-hundred meters above the cavern, an ancient Covern data recorder whirred to life. The vital signal had disappeared. Mindlessly, the computer transferred the data to a nearby module, activating for the first time in uncounted millennia. Electric currents ran up and down the module.
All right, where am I? she thought.
Oh, Wrecked Ship save station. Where was I? Right - upper Maridia. I wonder what killed me? A dim memory of awful pain identified the beast.
Well, let's not do that again, shall we?
